For people who prefer to watch movies in English, there are many places to find an English cinema in Madrid.

Maybe you’re on vacation and seeing a movie is part of your Madrid bucket list, or you’re an expat craving a taste of home.

Perhaps you’re a language enthusiast looking to improve your English skills, or you’re simply someone who appreciates the authenticity of films in their native tongue.

Whatever the case, Madrid has at least 11 different movie theaters that show movies in English.

Version original means “in its original language”
Dia del espectador refers to the day of the week when tickets are sold at a discount
– Cartelera refers to the movies that are showing at that time
– Próximamente means “coming soon”

Now, let’s take a closer look at your options.

Table of Contents

Cines Verdi

This cinema shows movies in English and in Spanish, as well as in other languages.

This movie theater also has a special weekly event called “Opera and Ballet in the Morning” featuring famous ballet and opera performances in their original language with Spanish subtitles. These are shown at 11 am.

Discounts are available on Tuesdays, all day long, when tickets cost just 3.90 euros. People over 65 can see a movie for just 2 euros on Tuesdays by showing their ID at the ticket office.

General tickets cost 8 euros and can be purchased online or at the ticket office.

Also, people over 65 and students pay 6.60 euros to see the earliest movies on Fridays.

Cines Renoir Plaza de España

If you’re looking for a movie theater that doesn’t rely heavily on mainstream movies, this is an excellent choice and my personal favorite.

Cines Renoir often shows independent movies that have received awards or been recognized at different film or cultural festivals, including South by Southwest, the Venice Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, and Sundance.

This movie theater doesn’t sell popcorn, so keep that in mind.

Cines Renoir Princesa

This theater and Renior Plaza España are very close to each other (maybe a 5-minute walk).

This theater is much larger than the one in Plaza Espana and offers a much bigger variety of films, all of them in their original version with subtitles in Spanish.

Yelmo Cines Ideal

I’ve probably seen a hundred movies at this English cinema in Madrid over the years. This is a great place that shows films in the afternoons and evenings, as well as concerts from musical groups and even sporting events on the big screen.

This theater also has special technology. I recently saw a film in 3D, which was fantastic, and they also have “laser” technology, which means that the movie has a superior image and surround sound.

You can buy tickets ontheir appor using the ticket machines inside the theater.

MK2 Cine Paz

This centrally-located movie theater has a good selection of English films and it also shows a variety of opera performances on the big screen.

If you buy your tickets online, it costs 9 euros for a standard ticket, 7 euros for kids under 12, 6 euros for students, and 3 euros for seniors.

Special prices are available on Wednesdays when tickets cost 5.50 euros. On Tuesdays, people over 65 can see a movie for just 2 euros.

Cine Doré

If you’re looking for a very unique movie experience, you should head to Cine Doré.

This movie theater is run by the Filmoteca Española and it plays foreign films all over the world, all of them in their original version (English, Japanese, French, etc.).

The building, which has a super cool, vintage vibe, was originally built in 1912. It has a Modernist facade that weathered the Spanish Civil War, and after being closed for over 2 decades, it reopened in 1989.

It’s a very unique movie theater that shows a wide variety of films, and keep in mind that popcorn is not available here.

In summer, it has an outdoor area where it shows movies.

General tickets cost 3 euros, and 2 euros for people over 65. If you’re going to go often, they also have monthly and annual passes available.

Cine Doré
Calle de Santa Isabel, 3
Closest metros: Anton Martin (L1)

Cines Golem

This movie theater is literally right next to another original version theater mentioned above: Renoir Plaza de España.

As for tickets, on Mondays and Wednesdays they cost 5 euros (as long as it’s not a holiday), and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they cost 7.50 euros (as long as it’s not a holiday). On Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and on holidays, tickets cost 8.50 euros. Also, people over 65 pay just 6.50.

Artistic Metropol

This cool theater offers a unique selection of movies that includes everything from new releases, documentaries, and old films (for example, Alfred Hitchco*ck), to horror films, and medium-length movies. This is the place to see films by Almodovar, Alfred Hitchco*ck, Stephen King, etc.

One unique feature is that it plays films in a setting that is appropriate for moms and dads to attend with their babies every Wednesday at 12.

These films are new movies as well as classics and the theater has a warmer temperature, the sound is lower, and there’s more light (so you can see your baby during the movie). I can’t guarantee the movie will be in English, so you will have to check the website.

The other cool feature of this theater is that it shows silent films that are accompanied by live musicians, usually on the piano.

Closest metros: Acacias, Puerta de Toledo (L5), Embajadores (L3)

Sala Equis

This very trendy movie theater is hidden from view when you’re walking down the street, so don’t miss it.

As the name suggests, this use to be a theater where X-rated movies were screened, but that’s no longer the case. Today they show movies from around the world in their original language, some of them in English.

It’s housed inside a small palace, and there’s a very cool bar and chill-out area where you can have a drink and a bite to eat before or after the movie.

There are also benches, lounge chairs, and swings for you to sit on, and there’s also a restaurant inside calledEl Imparcial.

Calle del Duque de Alba, 4
Closest metro: Tirso de Molina (L1)

Yelmo Cines Plaza Norte 2

Unless you have a car, this English cinema will most likely be too far to go.

However, if you do decide to check it out, it’s a great theater for seeing the latest blockbusters as well as some indie films.

Movies are shown in Spanish and in English and some are in “Luxury” theaters, which means very comfortable seating, the ability to order food from your seat, an extensive menu (steak tartare, duck rolls, etc.), large reclining seats, and other innovative features.

This movie theater also has special rooms for kids’ movies where they can sit on beanbag chairs and play on two giant slides before and after the film.
