Walmart Now Sells Funeral Potatoes and We’re Freaking Out (2024)

If you’re not in the know about funeral potatoes, the name might strike you as confusing at best and completely morbid at worst. So, when Walmart started selling a version of the comforting potato casserole that originated out West with the Mormon community and is commonly served at wakes and other social gatherings, the internet couldn’t handle it.

While funeral potatoes are also known as “Party Potatoes, Cheesy Potatoes, and Mormon Potatoes,” according to Walmart’s website, they decided to go with its most popular name, prompting customers to wonder if it was an April Fool’s joke.

One customer wrote on Walmart’s website, “I seriously thought this was a joke,” while another wrote, “Why are these called funeral potatoes? Certainly does not inspire me to buy!” Thankfully, other more in-the-know customers were there to explain to them what they were, and that they are indeed, a very real—and delicious—dish.

If you can get over the name, Walmart’s 13.6 ounce bag of funeral potatoes that makes 12 servings sounds super easy to make. All you have to do is mix the pouch’s contents with six cups of water, spread into a 9x13 baking dish and bake at 375 degrees for 50-55 minutes. For a finishing touch, once the funeral potatoes are out of the oven, you can sprinkle with 1/2 a cup of cheese and top with two cups of crushed corn flakes mixed with two tablespoons of butter.
