How does Kelley Blue Book determine values for used motorcycles?

Kelley Blue Book strives to accurately represent the market. We gather data directly from auctions, dealer sales reports, and dealer surveys, plus dealer and consumer listings and sales transactions nationwide. The values are derived after careful study and analysis of data we deemed reliable, in additional to current market and economic conditions.

Where can I find original MSRP or invoice price for a motorcycle?

Unfortunately, this information is not available on the internet at this time. If you have questions, please call our Customer Service Department at 1-800-258-3266, option 2.

How do I account for the value of additional equipment on my motorcycle?

From your motorcycle’s value page, an “Optional Equipment” table for common accessories is available by accessing the ‘Optional Equipment’ link. Values for manufacturer options that we’ve deemed significant may be found by accessing the ‘Motorcycle Specs’ link on the same page. Options not listed may not have a consistent or reportable added value in the used marketplace. That is not to say that such options are worthless – as they may make your vehicle more marketable against similar models; however, we do not address options when there is not a consistent value to report.

How can I get a value for a motorcycle you do not list?

A motorcycle may not appear on our site due to a lack of transactional data in the used marketplace to determine a market reflective value. This may be due to low production numbers, to it being a newly introduced model, or to it coming from a brand-new manufacturer. The best thing to do would be to get a private appraisal. An appraiser can assess the condition of your motorcycle and let you know what the value is. Another option would be to look at local listings in your area to see how much others are asking for the same motorcycle. A third option would be to take the bike to a few dealers and ask for their opinions. If you have a local bike shop, the mechanic working there might be a good source of information.

Why might the value of a motorcycle go up as time passes?

Values for motorcycles can fluctuate. The value of a motorcycle may go up due to favorable economic conditions at the time or an increased market for a particular type of motorcycle. It may also be that a particular motorcycle has acquired status as a collector’s item, which can cause the value to escalate.

Why doesn't Kelley Blue Book address aftermarket equipment, customization or the condition of a motorcycle?

Due to the very broad range of aftermarket equipment that can affect the value of a bike, it is nearly impossible without actually seeing the bike in person to put a value on them. However, we do provide a table with a percentage value of original retail pricing for customization on street motorcycles. This table is available from your vehicle’s value page by accessing the ‘Optional Equipment’ link.

How can I get a value for a motorcycle in very good or poor condition?

Kelley Blue Book cannot address each individual situation but can only give values for standard motorcycles in clean condition. Due to variance in condition, the value could vary from one extreme to the other. The best thing to do to assess extra value added by equipment, paint or condition would be to contact a private appraiser.

How does mileage affect the value of a motorcycle?

Kelley Blue Book does not give dollar figures to add or deduct based on mileage for motorcycles. The reason for this is that the condition of the motorcycle is of far more importance than the number of miles it has been ridden. A motorcycle that has been ridden several thousand miles on surface streets will have less wear and tear than another motorcycle that has the same number of miles but has been ridden over rougher terrain. It is between the buyer and the seller to determine how much to add or deduct from the Kelley Blue Book® Value based on the condition of the motorcycle.

What is the average yearly mileage for a motorcycle?

Mileage will vary from year to year and model to model. An ‘Average Expected Accumulated Mileage’ table is available for Street and Touring models by accessing the “Mileage & Condition Information” link on the value page for your motorcycle. For all other models, actual and average mileage can be hard to determine due to common odometer malfunctions.

How can I look up a motorcycle if all I have is the VIN number?

There are companies that offer VIN decoders for motorcycles online. Additionally, you can also contact the manufacturer or your local dealer directly for assistance with your VIN number.

How can I get a "lemon check" on used motorcycles?

There are companies that offer VIN checks for motorcycles online. Detailed history reports may be provided by some of these companies. Recall look-up services may also be available online if you have your vehicle’s VIN number.

Where are the ATV and side-by-side values?

Used ATV and side-by-side pricing can be found within the Motorcycle Value section of KBB.com.
