Grow Kit FAQS (2024)

How often do I spray my grow kit with water?

The first time you mist your kit, lift up the plastic flaps of the 'X' and spray your grow kit with a few pumps of water. For every time after, mist on top of the plastic at the cut area. A good indication that you are providing enough moisture is if you see droplets of condensation on the inside of the plastic flaps.

A rough ballpark is to mist your grow kit whenever you have a chance, at least 2-3 times a day. If it's looking a little dry, increase your frequency of misting. Remember that high humidity is crucial for your mushrooms to produce a great crop. Mushrooms are not like plants, they don't need watering, just humidity. Over-saturating your grow kit can kill the mushroom mycelium so please don't go crazy with the misting either. Just think Goldilocks...not too much but not too little, just right!

Is it OK if i miss a day of spraying?

This is not ideal but if this can't be avoided as you are going away, try and create a mini micro-climate around your grow kit to keep up the humidity. This can be done by placing a wet tea towel around the base of the kit or filling a sink with water and placing the kit nearby.

I don't see any growth, what is happening?

How long has it been? For a number of days after you first cut your 'X', you will see no activity. This is normal, don't worry, the kit is gearing up to fruit mushrooms. Once a really small amount of growth starts you will be surprised at how fast they grow, doubling in size every 24 hours.

How long do I wait for mushroom growth?

You should generally expect to see some baby mushrooms within 7-10 days. Each variety grows at a different pace. Here’s a guide on how long it takes to grow each of our kits until they are ready to harvest:

White oyster: 7-14 days

Pink oyster: Just 5-7 days

Lion’s mane: 14-21 days

Pearl oyster: 10-14 days

Blue oyster: 14-21 days

My white oysters are not white?

The colour of a mushroom is greatly affected by how much light they are exposed to. The more light the darker the mushroom, if you are noticing that your white oyster mushrooms are a shade of beige or brown this is completely normal. If you would like them to be as white as possible grow them in a very dark position. Temperature can also affect colouration. Oyster mushrooms grown in cooler temperatures will produce darker colouration.

How do you know if your mushroom grow kit is bad? ›

Off-odors: A strong, foul odor emanating from the growing containers or growing medium. Abnormal growth: Mushrooms that grow abnormally, such as those that are misshapen or stunted. Presence of molds: The appearance of molds, such as white or blue-green growths on the surface of the mushrooms or growing medium.

How many times can you reuse a mushroom grow kit? ›

Yes, you can most definitely reuse mushroom grow kits! Mushroom grow kits are generally designed to give you more than one harvest depending on the species of mushroom inside your growing kit. There is enough water nutrition available in the substrate to give you multiple harvests over a period of 2-10 weeks.

What is the white mold on my mushroom grow kit? ›

My kit looks like it is covered in white mold, is this normal? That's not mold, that's mycelium! Mushroom mycelium is white with fragrances ranging from earthy and sweet, to stronger and musty. Green or black colored molds are usually a sign of trouble.

How long does dried mycelium last? ›

In indoor conditions the grown part is shelf stable for 30 years. Unless it is exposed to constant moisture and other environmental conditions, it should not grow mold. The dehydrated GIY material is shelf stable and should be used within 10 weeks of the date on the bag's label, but lasts longer if refrigerated.

Does water stimulate mushroom growth? ›

Mycelium requires water to make a fruit body (mushroom), and mushrooms require humidity to release their spores. Growing a water intense crop in the desert requires us to be mindful of how, when, and why we grow mushrooms.

What does bad mycelium look like? ›

If you spot green, blue, grey, or black patches on or in your fruiting box, your culture is most likely contaminated. Do keep in mind, however, that small blue stains in the mycelium may just be bruising and not mould. Especially where the rye presses the mycelium against the grow box, you may see some blue spots.

What does contaminated agar look like? ›

Molds, bacteria, and yeasts will appear on the plate in small spots but will spread quickly. Yeasts/bacteria will typically have a white/yellowish milky appearance. Molds will have a somewhat similar look to mycelium but will spread very quickly and will turn green or black.

How long will mushroom grow kits last? ›

Water & Maintenance

Do not let the casing dry out, as it is very hard to remoisten it and mushrooms will not grow in dry casing. Keep your kit out of drafts and away from heat sources, which will dry out your kit. You want to keep the surface of the kit moist at all times without over watering the kit.

What is the yellow liquid in my mushroom grow kit? ›

The yellow liquid patches are metabolites; which are a bi-product from the enzymes breaking down the substrate. These are sometimes produced to help fight-off an unwanted contaminant within the bag. If you see this, there is no need to worry as it is perfectly normal.

How do I know if my mushroom grow kit is contaminated? ›

Identifying a contaminated mushroom grow kit is usually straightforward, as the mycelium is white, and any other color suggests contamination. However, there are exceptions to consider: A yellowish hue suggests aging and the formation of new defenses against bacteria.

How do you rehydrate mushroom kits? ›

In order to keep mushrooms dormant until you are ready to grow them, the substrate bag is free of moisture. By soaking the bag for 6-10 hours, you will rehydrate the substrate and provide the best growing environment for your mushrooms.

How do you know if mushroom substrate is too dry? ›

A) lots of water dripping shows that the substrate is too wet. b) a few drops released with some pressure show that the substrate is well watered. If it is too dry then with no drops will be released with pressure.

How to add moisture to a mushroom grow bag? ›
