Where can I find free death records in Texas? ›

Death records are accessible through county clerks or through the state Bureau of Vital Statistics.

Open record requests will be sent to the Comal County Sheriff's Office Open Records Coordinator. Open Record Requests must be made in writing. The request may be made online, in person, email or fax. Requests will be done in date order in which they are received.

A basic online search may reveal an obituary or information about a memorial service. Type the person's name and words like “death,” “obituary,” or “memorial” and any personal information you may have, such as their date of birth or names of close relatives who could be mentioned as one of their surviving kin.

Except where sealed or exempted by law, such records are non-confidential and, therefore, accessible to the public. The Texas Department of Public Safety maintains records compiled from law enforcement agencies across the state.

Police reports can be purchased for $6. You may come to the Police Department and pick one up between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or request one by mail and enclose a check or money order.

Vital Statistics maintains death records for the state of Texas. A death record is a vital document that records a person's death. Vital Statistics issues certified copies of death certificates or death verifications. You can work with Vital Statistics to order certified copies of or make changes to death records.

Texas Government Code, Chapter 552, gives you the right to access government records; and an officer for public information and the officer's agent may not ask why you want them. All government information is presumed to be available to the public. Certain exceptions may apply to the disclosure of the information.
