Balanced Diet | Definition & Examples - Lesson | Study.com (2024)

A healthy diet consists of several important food groups, including carbohydrates, protein, unsaturated fats, vitamins, minerals, fiber, and water.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are macronutrients widely available in several foods, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes. There are three main kinds of carbohydrates: sugar, starch, and fiber. Sugar is the simplest form of carbohydrates. Starch and fiber are complex, meaning they requires more time and energy to digest. This also means that complex carbohydrates keep you full for longer. Carbohydrates are essential in providing the body with fuel and energy in addition to protecting against several diseases. Some examples of complex carbohydrates include:

  • Fiber-rich vegetables and fruit, such as dried fruit
  • Whole grains, such as whole oats or bread
  • Legumes, such as beans and peas

Protein

Protein is another important macronutrient that several organs in the body require in order to function optimally, such as bone, muscle, skin, and hair. Consuming healthy proteins correspond to choosing lean protein options as opposed to some that are high-fat, such as choosing non-processed meat options. Protein is also readily found in vegetarian options such as legumes and nuts. Moreover, a person who wishes to build muscle should increase their protein intake in order for muscles to grow appropriately. Below are a few healthy protein options:

  • Lean red meat, poultry, and fish
  • Tofu
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Quinoa

Unsaturated v Saturated Fats

Fats are essential for a healthy and balanced diet. More specifically, unsaturated fats are important nutrients that the body requires in order to absorb vitamins appropriately. Furthermore, fat stored within the body is important for metabolism, temperature regulation, and insulation of vital organs within the body. The key difference between unsaturated and saturated fats corresponds to the the density of 'bad' cholesterol, which, if consumed in high quantities, can increase the risk for heart disease. Examples of saturated fats include cheese, butter, and palm oil, which can be replaced by several unsaturated fat examples. These include:

  • Avocados (and oil)
  • Olives (and oil)
  • Peanuts (and oil)
  • Corn and sunflower oil
  • Nuts and seeds, e.g. cashews
  • Fish, e.g. Salmon

Vitamins, Minerals, and Fiber

Vitamins, minerals, and fibers are very important in a balanced diet. Several vitamins and minerals are readily available in foods, even though they can also be taken as supplements. For example, calcium is readily available in milk, yoghurt, and kale, which is essential for bone growth and blood clotting. Iron is very important for red blood cell health and it can be readily found in beans, lentils, spinach, and beef. Magnesium is important in bone strength as well, in addition to nerve and muscle function, and can be found in soybeans, potatoes, and green leafy vegetables.

Fiber is an important carbohydrate that is essential in digestion, lowering bad cholesterol, keeping you full for longer, and helping regulate blood glucose (sugar) levels. Fiber can be found in oatmeal, lentils, peas, vegetables, and fruits.

Water

Drinking enough water throughout the day is another important component of a healthy and balanced diet. Remaining hydrated helps flush out the bad toxins in the body and prevents constipation and kidney stones. It is recommended to consume about six to eight glasses of water, or water-containing fluids, throughout the day. However, this is a baseline and depends on many factors. For instance, if a person lives in a hot climate, it would be better to consume more water to make up for the hydration lost due to sweat. If a person is suffering from the flu or any other health infection, it would be best to remain extra hydrated as well.
