A blueprint for the future – The 918 Spyder - Article overview - Issue 374 - Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG (2024)
Another breakthrough is the thermal management and regenerative braking systems of the 918 Spyder, which have already inspired changes. A similar form of this energy recovery system is implemented in the LMP1 prototypes of the 919 Hybrid, the very model which triumphed a one-two victory at the 24 hours of Le Mans. The 918 Spyder’s technology platform also blazed new trails with spectacular design solutions like its all-carbon body, fully variable aerodynamics and adaptive rear axle steering, with these last two examples already available in production sports cars such as the 911 Turbo models, 911 GT3 and 911 GT3 RS.
Uniting these technological breakthroughs into one, the 918 Spyder set history at the Nürburgring in September 2013 with a lap time of 6 minutes and 57 seconds, a feat that stands unrivalled even today for road vehicles. Yet its fuel consumption is just 3 l/100 km, a number that not only beats most of the small vehicles of today, but also sets a benchmark for what is possible for the future. With the 918 Spyder, the potential of plug-in hybrid technology is clearly showcased for all to see — not only for more economical, sustainable driving, but more importantly for the unparalleled sports car experience it can offer.
Only 918 editions of the 918 Spyder exist in the world. As such, it is not only the pinnacle of modern sports car design and technology representing an important turning point in hybrid engineering; it is also a collector’s item and a masterpiece in its own right.
All legacies start somewhere. One starts right now with the 918 Spyder.

918 Spyder

It hits zero to 60 mph in 2.2 seconds with a top speed of 214 mph. The ultra-rare 2015 Porsche 918 “Weissach” Spyder is heading to Sotheby's Sealed auction which ends on January 20, 2024 and is estimated to go for more than $2.3 million USD.
The system delivers an output of 875 bhp and 944 pound-feet of torque. The video mentions 887 bhp, which refers to the metric horsepower rating. It's also worth noting that the official top speed figure provided by Porsche for the 918 Spyder matches the speed achieved in the video: 214 mph.
While there's a substantial performance difference between the two, the Porsche kept up quite well. Both manufacturers claim a mid-2.0-second sprint to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour), though the Bugatti's top speed dwarfs the Porsche's – 214 mph (345 kph) to 261 mph (420 kph).
The 918 Spyder paired a 4.6-litre V8 with twin electric motors (one on each axle) to give the driver a combined 899PS of power. Less than 1,000 were made – 918 (of course!) to be exact – but those lucky owners were able to experience a 0-100km/h time of just 2.6 seconds.
Is the Porsche 918 Spyder street legal? Absolutely! The 918 was designed, tested, and legalized as a street-legal road car, so you won't have any problems registering the car at your local DMV office.
Auto Express was first behind the wheel of the Edition 918 Spyder: a restyled version of the 523bhp 911 Turbo S. Porsches don't come any more exclusive than this.
On Monday 14 June 2021, the 515 kW (700 hp) Porsche 911 GT2 RS with the Manthey Performance Kit lapped the 20.8-kilometre circuit in the presence of a notary in 6:43.300 minutes. This is the fastest ever lap of the track which has been nicknamed the Green Hell in a road-legal car.
A bargain at £781,000 the German hypercar certainly wasn't. Up against the McLaren P1 (around £866,000) and Ferrari's million-pound-plus LaFerrari, the 918 was outpriced, but certainly not outgunned.
Porsche may have wrapped up production of the 918 Spyder nearly a decade ago but there are still mint-condition examples out there. You just need to know where to look. One such 918 Spyder with the Weissach Package is currently being auctioned in Hong Kong via Sotheby's Sealed.
