In June 2019, the government committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2050. This commitment, combined with interim ambitions to reduce direct public sector emissions by 50% by 2032 and 75% by 2037, requires urgent action.

This pledge is to halve greenhouse gas emissions before 2030 and achieve net zero emissions before 2050 whilst sharing information on their progress each year.

SME business leaders that make the SME Climate Commitment agree to start taking action immediately toward three core targets: halving emissions before 2030; achieving net zero emissions before 2050; and disclosing progress every year. These are the minimum levels of commitment and action.

Leading UK businesses like BP, Ericsson, IKEA, BT Group, British Airways, Unilever, Shell and Sainsbury's, are already committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and many of them have set targets to reach net-zero emissions in their supply chains (Scope 3 emissions).
